Basic Beaded Earrings

Love gorgeous beaded jewelry, but not sure how to make your own? Let us show you

the basic tools and techniques needed to make attractive earrings in just minutes.

Choose from our large selection of high-quality materials; silver ear wires and head pins, faceted Czech crystal in all colors and sizes, and seed beads in our own color way mixes. Learn basic wire wrapping techniques as well as advanced techniques such as working with chain and clusters. Workshop fee includes all materials needed to make two pairs of earrings.

How fun to spend some time coloring with a box of Crayola crayons?  We’ll color a marked picture on cloth and then add thread to highlight and embellish.  Quilting and binding will be covered if time allows, you’ll go home inspired with new ideas and an almost finished project.  (lab fee applies)

Kit Contains:    1 -14” square printed background fabric

                        1 -14” square Muslin for backing

                        1 -14” square cotton batting

                        1 -14” square freezer paper

 

 

Supplies Needed:        1 -24 box Crayola crayons

                                    1 -#2 lead pencil

                                    1 – ultra-fine black sharpie marker

 

 

Supplies Needed for Finishing:  (if time allows)  Note:  Finishing techniques and several options will be discussed and explained but time may not allow for execution during class.

 

                                    Sewing machine for machine quilting and embellishment, if desired

                        OR       Needles for Hand quilting and embellishments

                                    A variety of thread (colors and textures)

                                    Beads and/or ribbon

                                    Binding Fabric – 2 - 2 ¼”x WOF strips

Cooking Matters™ classes provide a culinary-enhanced nutrition education program that teaches participants how to prepare meals that are healthy, tasty and low in cost. Each lesson engages participants in hands-on meal preparation, practical nutrition tips and food budgeting skills. This class provides participants with the knowledge and skills to make healthy food choices, as well as to prepare healthy meals and snacks on a limited budget. Class highlights include: lessons featuring hands-on learning and recipe preparation, group discussions, tasty food samples, free recipe book, and a bag of groceries to prepare a dish from each week’s class at home.

Sarah Murphy has been a SNAP-Ed nutrition educator within the Public Health Program at the Opportunity Alliance in South Portland for nearly 4 years. She has also been a nutrition counselor for the WIC program in Maine. Sarah has a life-long interest in nutrition and cooking and holds a master’s degree in Human Nutrition. She feels that her current role as a SNAP-Ed educator provides her with the opportunity to teach about nutrition and spend lots of time in the kitchen, which she loves! When not teaching a cooking, Sarah is a competitive powerlifter and is working towards her personal training certificate.

Dimensional Holiday Snowflake Ornament

Add a festive flare to your holiday by creating these easy and intriguing dimensional snowflake ornaments.   Learn to fuse fabric to poster board, cutting it into strips, weave and glue them together and embellish them as desired for a simple yet effective holiday decoration.  Hang them on your holiday tree or use them as adornments to your gift packages.  Once you learn the technique, you’ll want to explore the possibilities of differing sizes and fabric combinations. This class is suitable to all skill levels and a fun and relaxing way to usher in the holidays.

Students will need to bring:

Glue gun with several extra glue sticks

Heat resistant rubber finger protectors or heat resistant gloves, if you have them

            Sharp utility scissors

            Wonder clips or binder clips (about 10-12)

            Small rotary cutting mat with rotary cutter and ruler

             Embellishments (if you have them) – jewels, ribbon bows, and beads seem to work best

Driving Dynamics For Seniors

The Maine Driving Dynamics course is a driver improvement course that is aimed to improve a student’s defensive driving awareness and abilities. This five-hour course includes discussion of collision avoidance techniques, safety issues, driver habits and attitudes, and the basic elements that constantly challenge drivers on Maine’s highways. Our goal is to save lives, prevent injuries, and reduce vehicle-related crashes. The course may be taken for point reduction only once every 365 days.

Students who successfully complete the course will receive a three-point credit on their driving record.
