Improving Digital Literacy for Free with NDEC

The NDEC offers over 40 classes in an online interactive format and at partner onsite locations throughout the state of Maine. This overview goes over the three curricula – Aging Well With Technology, For Home & Family, and For Work & Business – and is designed for individuals looking to improve their personal computer skills as well as for partner organizations who want to more fully understand what we offer for classes.
Free for residents of the State of Maine. $50 fee for non-residents.

The Affordable Connectivity Program is an FCC program that was put in place to help low-incomefamilies pay for the cost of connecting to broadband internet access. In this class we will look atqualifying for and applying for the benefit, and what you can expect from Internet Service Providers.

American Heart Association (AHA): Heartsaver Adult/Child/Infant CPR and AED & First Aid

This course provides a framework for learning basic skills that may save a life or prevent further injury. You will learn first aid basics, CPR for adults, children, and infants, AED use, and emergency opioid aid. The course includes classroom instruction and practice as well as a return demonstration of skills. There is a pass/fail component to the demonstration of skills learned in the class. The class is 8 hours in length.

Crochet 101-Learn to Crochet
with Micah Peterson

In this 3 week Crochet 101 class we’ll work from start to finish, talking about yarns, weights and their different uses, which knitting needles to use when and then stitch up a project together. The Crochet 101: Beginner Class is perfect for a total newbie or as a refresher if it has been a while since you had your hands on a hook. We will tailor the class to meet your crocheting skill level so that you leave each class excited about what you’ve learned.
Crochet Skills You Will Learn:
- Most basic crochet stitches such as making a slip knot and how to crochet a chain.
- Single crochet,
- Half double crochet,
- Double crochet,
- Treble crochet,
- Double treble crochet.
- How to make a magic circle.
- Front and Back post.
Lab Fee: $15 due to the instructor the first night of class.

Boho-Style Fabric Style Bracelets
with Betsy Kate Paradis

Fun and easy, these simple--and inexpensive--bracelets are a great way to add some Bohemian style to your wardrobe. Using sscraps of fabric, you can customize your own set of bracelets to match your wardrobe. Want to bling it up a bit? Add some beads! Truly, the sky is the limit in terms of getting creative with these crafty adornments. Good for all skill levels. No tools needed. All supplies will be provided by the instructor. Grab a friend and come have some fun at this easy-going, one-class workshop.

Betsy Kate Paradis has always been drawn to fabric arts. Whether embroidering or hand-sewing or quilting, she likes to take traditional crafts and make them fun and funky. Having worked several years in a quilt shop, Betsy Kate developed a love of fabric that continues today. She seeks out different ways to use fabrics from her vast stash. Her sense of humor and relazed teaching style make her workshops entertaining and fun.
American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS)

This is an American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support Course targeted for the healthcare field audience. The course provides the foundation for saving lives from cardiac arrest. It teaches both single-rescuer and team basic life support skills in both the prehospital and in facility environments with a focus on high quality CPR and team dynamics. This is an 8 hour course.
Smudging 101
with Donna Shaw

Smudging is the traditional act of burning one or more (a mix) of sacred herbs or plants to create a “cleansing smoke.” Typically associated with North American Indigenous tribes and their ceremonies, it is a ceremonial act for purifying and cleansing the soul and body of negative energy, thoughts, and attachments. Smudging is also used to remove negative energy to clear spaces and objects. In this class you will learn how to smudge, make your own smudge feather and smudge spray.
